A death certificate in China is an official document issued by a hospital or judicial authority indicating the cause, date and place of a person’s death. Death certificates are usually used to dispose of the deceased’s estate or as auxiliary materials for notarizing the birth certificates of the deceased’s children.If it is to be used in a country other than China, the Death Certificate must be notarized before it can be recognized as legitimate in other countries.
How to apply for notarization of Death Certificate in China?
If you’re confused about what to do, don’t worry, follow our steps.
1. What is your nationality? Have you ever changed your name?
2. What was the deceased's relationship to you? What is the nationality of the deceased? Has he/she changed his/her name?
3. What country the document is used for and for what purpose? (e.g., inheritance, house property, immigration, permanent residence abroad, etc.)
4. Which language do you need to translate the notarial certificate into? How many copies do you need?

Notarization Procedures of Death Certificate in China
STEP 1. Take the Death Certificate to Notary Public Offices in China.
STEP 2. Notary Public Offices issues the Notarized Certificate to confirm that the copy of the Death Certificate matches the original.
Documents required for Death Certificate Notarization
1.Original Death Certificate
2.The applicant’s Chinese ID card or foreign passport with visa or long-term residence permit in China. Chinese citizens also need to provide a household registration book.
3.Original passport of the deceased
4.Certificate of relationship between the applicant and the deceased
5.The registration cancellation certificate due to death of the deceased. (If the deceased is Chinese)
6.If a third party is helping with the application, the power of attorney is also required.
The notarized Death Certificate will include following information:
•The name of the Applicant
•Gender
•Nationality
•Current valid ID number (Such as Chinese ID card, passport number, etc)
•The applicant's relationship to the deceased
•The copy of the Death Certificate
•Statement indicates that the deceased died at a certain location for some reason.
Processing Time for the Death Certificate in China
Processing time for the notarization of Death Certificate is 4-6 workdays, excluding mailing time.
Apostille and Legalization for the Death Certificate
For some countries, simply obtaining a notarial certificate from the notary public is not enough, and Legalization or Apostille may also be required.
China has successfully joined the Hague Convention and become a member state. The Apostille Convention came into effect in China on November 7, 2023.
• If the country you will use the Death Certificate is in the 1961 Hague Convention, you need to provide an Apostilled document.
• If the country you will use the Death Certificate is not in the 1961 Hague Convention, you need to provide a Legalized document.

Take the notarized Death Certificate to the Department of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China or a Foreign Affairs Offices entrusted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China for apostille.
Legalization Procedures of the Death Certificate
STEP 1. Take the notarial Death Certificate to Chinese Foreign Ministry for authentication.
STEP 2. Take the authenticated Death Certificate to corresponding Embassy/Consulate in China for legalization.
