How to apply for notarization of Adoption Certificate in China?

1. What is your nationality? Have the parents of the child ever changed your name ?
2. Has the adopted child changed his or her name?
3. What country the document is used for and for what purpose? (e.g., work visa, study visa, immigration, permanent residence abroad, etc.)
4. Which language do you need to translate the notarial certificate into? How many copies do you need?

Notarization Procedures of Adoption Certificate in China
STEP 1. Take the Adoption Certificate to Notary Public Offices in China.
STEP 2. Notary Public Offices issues the Notarized Certificate to confirm that the copy of the Adoption Certificate matches the original.
Documents required for Adoption Certificate Notarization
1. Original adoption certificate
2. The applicant’s Chinese ID card or foreign passport with visa or long-term residence permit in China. Chinese citizens also need to provide a household registration book.
3. If a third party is helping with the application, a power of attorney is also required.

The notarized Adoption Certificate will include following information:
• Gender
• Date of Birth
• Nationality
• Current Passport Number
• The copy of the Adoption Certificate
• Statement indicates that the original of your Adoption Certificate is in conformity with previously mentioned duplicate.
Processing Time for the Adoption Certificate in China
Processing time for the notarization of Adoption Certificate is 4-6 workdays, excluding mailing time.
Apostille and Legalization for the Adoption Certificate
For some countries, simply obtaining a notarial certificate from the notary public is not enough, and Legalization or Apostille may also be required.
China has successfully joined the Hague Convention and become a member state. The Apostille Convention came into effect in China on November 7, 2023.
• If the country you will use the Adoption Certificate is in the 1961 Hague Convention, you need to provide an Apostilled document.
• If the country you will use the Adoption Certificate is not in the 1961 Hague Convention, you need to provide a Legalized document.
Apostille Procedures of the Adoption Certificate
Take the notarized Adoption Certificate to the Department of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China or a Foreign Affairs Offices entrusted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China for apostille.
Legalization Procedures of the Adoption Certificate
STEP 1. Take the notarial Adoption Certificate to Chinese Foreign Ministry for authentication.
STEP 2. Take the authenticated Adoption Certificate to corresponding Embassy/Consulate in China for legalization.
